GMO Insects?

According to the BBC's article "Decision awaited on genetically modified insect trial", a UK biotechnology company has begun experiments on genetically modified insects. If their research gains approval, the company aims to release the olive flies in Spain. Once in Spain, upon mating with female olive crop pests, the males with exert a "female-killing" gene. The aim of this experiment is to reduce the olive pest population. Nonetheless, personally, I do not completely agree with the UK biotechnology company's actions. Although this trial will ensure the decrease of the olive pest population, it will also negatively impact the ecosystem as a whole. However, the biotechnology company's justification for this experiment is to protect olive agriculture in Europe, as it is an important industry.
